Benin begin search for a new coach

Benin have not renewed the contract of their coach Omar Tchomogo after two and a half years at the head of the team with mixed results.

Tchomogo’s contract expired on December 17 and will not be extended, the Benin Football Federation said.

It comes after Benin failed to qualify for both the 2017 African Nations Cup and did not get past the preliminary round of the qualifiers for next year’s World Cup in Russia.

The final straw for the federation was failure in the CHAN-2018 qualifiers where Benin beat neighbours Togo on post-match penalties to get past the first round but then lost 2-1 on aggregate to Nigeria, after winning the first leg at home.

The 39-year-old Tchomogo, who played in France and Portugal during his career, had 34 matches in charge (19 competitive and 15 friendlies). He had 12 wins, lost 11 and drew 11 games.
