Juve reject Gunners' Benatia bid

Arsenal have had a £35m bid for Medhi Benatia rejected by Juventus.

Arsene Wenger is keen to improve his defence after a series of calamitous performances.

The Gunners have conceded a total of 23 goals in 19 Premier League matches so far this season, which is the joint-highest of any team in the top seven.

And the FA Cup holders are poised to fix that problem during the January transfer window.

But, according to Calciomercato, their effort to lure Benatia to the Emirates failed and may have to turn elsewhere for defensive reinforcements.

It was rumoured that Benatia’s team-mate Daniele Rugani was initially targeted by the north London club but Wenger seems more keen in a centre-back with more experience like the Moroccan.

The 30-year-old defender also played for Roma and Bayern Munich before moving to Turin on loan - he signed a permanent deal with the Italian giants last May.

He is now an established member of the Italian champions’ backline following the departure of Leonardo Bonucci who joined AC Milan last summer.

Which is why Juventus, who are a point behind Serie A leaders Napoli, don’t seem interested in letting Benatia go to Arsenal.

The Morocco international has made a total of 35 appearances for Juventus ever since his arrival in 2016.
