Mahrez hoped for United move

According to The Star, Mahrez prematurely left the Algerian camp for Old Trafford in hope of sealing a last minute deal, but he was left red-faced as a move to the Red Devils failed to materialise.

The Leicester City winger was allowed to leave the Algerian squad on the eve of their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Zambia, in an attempt to force a move away from the Foxes.

Mahrez,26, was desperate to end his stay at the King Power Stadium, but despite widespread interest the wing-wizard failed to secure a deadline day switch.

Arsenal, Barcelona, Manchester United, Roma and Tottenham Hotspur were among the clubs said to be interested in the attacker, and despite his last-ditch effort to join one of Europe's big guns he will remain in Leicester.
