Mayuka released by Zamalek

Zambia striker Emmanuel Mayuka is among a host of players that Egypt's Zamalek will offload in the summer, club chairman Mortada Mansour said on Saturday.

The 26-year-old, who led Zambia to the 2012 African Cup of Nations title and finished as the tournament's top scorer, has struggled to establish himself since joining Zamalek in January 2016.

He could only score seven goals in 37 appearances in all competitions, providing three assists.

Mayuka, who was mocked by many Zamalek fans for being overweight, made only 15 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring once in an African Champions League game.

In a news conference held at the club's headquarters, Mansour also announced that long-serving midfielder Ibrahim Salah will also leave along with defenders Islam Gamal, Shawki El-Said, Ali Fathi, Mohamed Nassef and Osama Ibrahim as well as midfielder Salah Rico.

Most of those who will depart joined Zamalek last summer.

The Cairo giants have endured a disappointing season, failing to win any silverware for the first time since 2012.

They finished third in the Egyptian Premier League, were eliminated from the African Champions League group stage and exited the Egypt Cup at the semi-final stage.
