Equatorial Guinea ramped up security for final

African Cup of Nations hosts Equatorial Guinea showed their military might just hours to the kick-off of the final between Ghana and Ivory Coast as they brought in truckload after truckload of security men, some of them heavily armed.

Hundreds of stern-looking anti-riot policemen and soldiers heavily armed with sub-machine guns, kept watch at the 35,000-capacity Estadio de Bata, built by the Chinese in 2007.

“Wow! They have brought in a whole damn army,” exclaimed one foreign journalist as he watched the platoons of security men storm into the stadium.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) demanded Equatorial Guinea tighten security after the shameful riot during Thursday’s semi-final match between the host nation and Ghana, which left more than a score of Black Stars fans injured.
