CAN opens with a stalemate

The opening game of CAN 2013 between hosts South Africa and new boys Cape Verde was a disappointing goalless draw.

South Africa have struggled to score goals recently and in this game you could see why. Bafana Bafana failed to create clear-cut chances in the Johannesburg rain.

The best chance of the game went to Cape Verde in the first half but Platini scuffed his shot badly wide.

The wet conditions did not encourage quality on either side and the result was a game to forget.

Both sides found themselves restricted to long-range efforts, with South Africa's pumping long balls up the pitch, rather than playing through midfield. It was pretty easy for the Cape Verde centre-backs Fernando Varela and Nando to cope with them.

South African coach Igesund responded to the half way sterility by swapping Dikgacoi for Lerato Chabangu.

Bafana Bafana increased ther urgency as they chased a winner. Khumalo headed over from close range in injury time but there was little else.

Cape Verde will be the happier team with a point and Morocco will see it as a result that gives them the potential upper hand as Group A takes shape. On this form South Africa will struggle to get out of the group.
